In a sneak peek of the September 28 episode, the Nashville actress, 33, detailed the misconceptions about her journey as a mother to daughter Kaya, who lives in Ukraine with Panettiere’s ex Wladimir Klitschko.

Panettiere said that what bothers her the most is “the idea that I’m a person who would just easily throw out my child, give away my child,” she told co-hosts Jada Pinkett Smith, Adrienne Banfield Norris and guest host Kelly Osbourne.

“The comments that people made, or things that they assumed about my situation with my daughter were just so off and heartbreaking.”

The singer recalled once walking through an airport and seeing a false headline about her and her 7-year-old.

“It said something like, ‘Why Hayden Chose to Give Up Her Daughter,’” she continued, adding that she was “so misrepresented.”

The New York native said: “It was tough, and it took me a long time to be able to talk about it, and this is really the first time that I’ve delved into that specific topic because it’s just scary, you don’t want to piss anyone off, especially the person who has control of the child.”

Panettiere and Klitschko dated on and off from 2009 to 2018 and got engaged in 2013, though they never made it down the aisle.

Over the years, the Bring It On: All or Nothing alum has been open about her struggles with postpartum depression, alcohol and drug addiction.

In an interview with People in July, Panettiere revealed she was given “happy pills” to make her “peppy” during red carpet events.

“I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction,” she told the outlet at the time.

Following the birth of Kaya, Panettiere recalled not wanting to “spend any time with her,” noting: “There was just this gray color in my life.”

Ultimately, the Heroes star sought treatment for her depression but continued to secretly struggle with alcohol. As a result, her relationship with the boxer crumbled.

“He didn’t want to be around me,” she shared of Klitschko. “I didn’t want to be around me. But with the opiates and alcohol I was doing anything to make me feel happy for a moment. Then I’d feel worse than I did before. I was in a cycle of self-destruction.”

During her Red Table Talk chat, Panettiere said that the decision to give Klitschko custody of Kaya was not a “discussion.”

“If [Klitschko] had come to me and said I think because of where you’re at right now and your struggles that you’re having, it would be good for her to be over here with me for a while—which if I had probably had enough of a conversation I would’ve said okay that makes sense, I get it, I’ll come there to visit and stuff like that.”

“Because of the way that it was done, it was very upsetting,” she continued. “I mean, it was the worst signing those papers, the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever, ever had to do in my life.”

Red Table Talk airs Wednesdays at 12 p.m. ET.
