After creating music for Smash, Hairspray, and Mary Poppins Returns, Tony award-winning composing duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman were hired by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios to write Rogers: The Musical, the fictional musical about Captain America that is featured in the upcoming Hawkeye series. In an interview with Inverse, Shaiman reflected on when the idea for a musical came about. “It was just there. It was an idea that almost came up as a joke one day and then they didn’t let it go. It just kept coming up,” Shaiman said.

However, not everyone shared the same excitement for the musical. Shaiman further shared his thoughts on the mixed response from fans, calling it “bittersweet”. “There are a lot of people who were like, ‘What is this?’ I understand that there are a lot of people who would’ve expected and wanted the post-credits scene to be some new kernel of what’s gonna happen next in the MCU. I completely get it,” Shaiman added. “We made something that not everyone likes. It’s been bittersweet almost, but to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is crazy.”
While the musical might’ve not stuck the landing with every fan, Hawkeye overall proved to be a more than worthy addition to the MCU that felt like a breath of fresh air from the more recent Marvel content centered on cosmic storylines. The series’ more grounded, street-level setting combined with the amazing chemistry between its leads and impressive action sequences was met with praise from critics. Hawkeye follows Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton / Hawkeye post-blip in New York City during the Holidays, as he is forced to team up with the young archer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to stop enemies from his past when he was Ronin in Avengers: Endgame.
Other than the introduction of exciting new characters like Bishop and Maya Lopez / Echo (who is set to have her own spin-series titled Echo), the series also sees the return of many familiar faces from previous Marvel projects. Florence Pugh’s Yelena Boleva returns after being instructed to hunt down and kill Barton in Black Widow’s post-credits scene as well as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin from Netflix’s Daredevil making a brief appearance in the finale. With Charlie Cox’s Daredevil also confirmed in the MCU, the future of phase 4 and beyond is shaping up to be one epic journey.
Created by Mad Men and Bridgerton’s Jonathan Igla, Hawkeye also stars Vera Farmiga as Eleanor Bishop, Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne, Fra Fee as the mercenary Kazi, Linda Cardellini as Laura Barton, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez.
Hawkeye’s 6 episodes are available to stream on Disney Plus.
