The Harry Potter: Magic Awakened name was first thought to be the title of the leaked RPG that was eventually revealed to be Hogwarts Legacy. The actual Magic Awakened is a Mobile and PC offering by Chinese developer NetEase that incorporates RPG story-telling with card-based combat. The story sees players take control of a fully customizable character, making their way through the years at Hogwarts, 10 years after the Battle of Hogwarts that took place at the end of The Deathly Hallows.

Jam City’s Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is currently the highest-grossing Harry Potter Mobile title to date, having made $342 million since its launch in April 2018. If Magic Awakened continues to gross similar profits as it has made since release, it could become the highest-grossing Harry Potter Mobile IP by the end of this year, or the beginning of next. Although it made $180 million during its first month of release, and dropped to $48 million in October, Magic Awakened still has major territories to release in, including Europe and the Americas. These profits have only taken into account Google Play and Apple Store profits from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao thus far. It’s also worth noting that the $228 million does not include PC, or third-party Android store profits.

The huge amount made from Magic Awakened so far, despite its limited release, may come as a surprise to anybody following the news of Niantic’s Harry Potter: Wizards Unite shut down. The AR Mobile game could only muster $39.4 million in lifetime profits since its launch in June 2019. Impressive for a smaller mobile game, but a huge letdown when compared to Niantic’s most popular AR game, Pokemon GO, which has made $1.1 billion during 2021 alone, and over $5 billion since its launch in July 2016.

Unfortunately for Western Harry Potter fans, there has been no announcement as to when Magic Awakened will release in the Americas or Europe. However, NetEase will be slowly releasing it in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea by the end of 2021. However, those disappointed by the lack of information on a Western release date might have some Harry Potter: Hogwarts Legacy news coming soon to tide them over.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is out now for Mobile and PC in select Asian countries.
